Socio-Technical Research Workshop Call for Participation

Socio-Technical Research: Connecting Disciplines in the iSchools
iConference, Seattle, Washington
Time: 9am-5:30pm, Tuesday, February 8.
Registration is Open

Scholars from many disciplines have recognized the need for interdisciplinary research agendas that address the complexity of socio-technical systems. The socio-technical perspective acknowledges that human enterprises are not reducible to either social or technological components. Instead, the design and implementation of technologies and the social order of human interaction are mutually constitutive entities that affect each other in varied and ongoing ways. This complexity is a central problem for researchers in the iSchools, whose work often addresses the relationships between information technology/practice and individuals, groups, organizations and societies.

iSchools have a strong tradition of interdisciplinarity and the iConference attracts researchers with diverse backgrounds. In the 2009 workshop, interdisciplinary similarities were examined from within specific scholarly disciplines. In the 2010 workshop, participants explored intersections between disciplines by defining keywords that they explored as boundary objects. This year, we propose to further build interdisciplinary dialogue and help frame the socio-technical agenda in the iSchools community through discussions that are grounded in ongoing socio-technical research projects. The workshop will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds and interests to continue defining the socio-technical research agenda through a full day of discussion and small group work.

Please submit a statement, roughly 500-750 words, that describes

  • the socio-technical aspects of a current project(s),
  • a brief description of research approach,
  • major research challenges and/or what he participant would like to learn at this workshop to advance the work.
